GHS To Compete In Reconfigured District 7-4A

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 2, 2012

Granbury High School will remain in Class 4A for the 2012-13 and 2012-14 school years. The classification was made as part of the biennial reclassification and realignment of schools by the University Interscholastic League, a division of the University of Texas at Austin that oversees school extracurricular activities.

Under the two-year realignment, GHS football and basketball will compete in District 7-4A. Other schools in the district are Aledo, Fort Worth Arlington Heights, Fort Worth South Hills, Fort Worth Southwest, Fort Worth Trimble Tech, Fort Worth Western Hills, and Fort Worth Wyatt.

Granbury is the only high school to remain in District 7. Most of the current district rivals – Burleson, Cleburne, Crowley, Everman, and Joshua – will be in District 8, while both Arlington Seguin and Mansfield Summit move to District 15.

“The realignment is probably one of the biggest shakeups the UIL has ever had because they broke up Fort Worth [between District 6 and 7],” commented Granbury ISD athletic director Dwight Butler. “But we are excited about the new challenge. It never hurts to have something new.”

Granbury ISD submitted 1887.5 students for the realignment process – down from the 2047.5 turned in 2010. Class 4A is composed of schools with student populations between 1,005 and 2,089. 5A schools are those with 2,090 students and above.

“Granbury students will continue to have the opportunity to compete at a high level in Texas high school sports,” said Butler. “Competition is always challenging regardless of classification, and we hope to offer students the opportunity to learn character, leadership, and sportsmanship regardless of the class or district that we are assigned.”

Realignment for other extracurricular groups will be released later in the spring. Other athletic and academic teams have generally followed the districts for football and basketball, but soccer and swimming are currently in District 15-4A that differs with the alignment for other sports.

The UIL is the rulemaking body for educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests in Texas public schools. The league aims to provide healthy, character building, educational activities carried out under rules providing for good sportsmanship and fair play for all participants.
